An Oily-Skin Routine with Fuller's Earth (Multani Mitti)
For oily skin, use fuller's earth (multani mitti) as a thin clay mask for 5–10 minutes once a week, up to twice if your skin stays comfortable. It takes up surface oil for a cleaner, more matte look; it doesn't treat acne or shrink pores.
The short answer: for oily skin, use fuller's earth (multani mitti) as a short clay mask once a week, or up to twice a week if your skin stays comfortable: a thin layer of powder and water on clean skin for 5–10 minutes, rinsed off before it cracks. It takes up surface oil, so skin usually looks less shiny and feels cleaner afterwards. It won't treat acne or permanently change your pores or how much oil your skin makes.
Who this routine suits, and who should choose another
- Oily skin: the clearest fit. The more surface oil there is, the more difference you'll see.
- Combination skin: put the clay on your forehead, nose and chin only, and leave drier cheeks alone. Time it by the driest area you've covered.
- Oily but dehydrated skin (shiny yet tight): use it only on the oiliest zones, keep it wetter and shorter, and moisturise afterwards.
- Dry or easily irritated skin: a non-clay mask such as Aloe Vera Powder usually suits better. If you still want clay, use a little on an oily patch for 3–5 minutes.
Whatever your skin type, skip it on a day your skin is broken, sunburned, freshly scrubbed or irritated, and keep it off picked or very inflamed spots.
Choosing your routine: a mask, a quick wash or a blend
- The plain mask: 1–2 teaspoons of powder with cool water added a little at a time until it looks like thin yoghurt. Let it stand 2–3 minutes, spread a thin layer on clean skin, away from your eyes and lips, and rinse after 5–10 minutes. Start here: water is all the clay needs.
- The quick wash: ½–1 teaspoon with 2–3 teaspoons of water, massaged over your face for 30–60 seconds, avoiding your eyes and lips, and rinsed straight away. It's handy on a shiny day, up to twice a week, but not as a daily cleanser.
- With Neem: 1 teaspoon each of fuller's earth and Neem Powder with 3–4 teaspoons of warm water, 5–10 minutes, once a week. It's a more drying, herb-forward mask for oily or combination skin, not for dry or reactive skin.
- With Aloe Vera Powder: 1 teaspoon each with 3–4 teaspoons of warm water, left to rest 5 minutes, then 5–10 minutes on your skin. The paste is wetter and softer, but the clay still dries if you leave it too long.
- With Orange Peel: 1 teaspoon each of fuller's earth and Orange Peel Powder with 3–4 teaspoons of warm water, left to rest 5 minutes, then 5–10 minutes on your skin, rinsed off before it cracks. It's an occasional, citrus-scented mask for oily areas once your skin is fine with both powders, not an everyday mix and not for dry or reactive skin.
Use cosmetic-grade fuller's earth, not one sold for industrial or household jobs. Mix it in a glass, ceramic, wooden or plastic bowl with a non-metallic spoon, and scoop the powder close to the bowl so you don't breathe in the fine dust. Patch test the exact mix 24–48 hours before first use. Don't go ahead if the skin burns, swells, blisters or turns red, or if it itches and the itch doesn't settle. A patch test can't rule out a reaction later. If any gets in your eyes, rinse them with plenty of clean water. Step-by-step instructions, timing and other mixes are in how to use fuller's earth on your face.
How often should you use it?
Start once a week. Oily or combination skin can go up to twice a week if it stays comfortable; normal skin needs it less often, and drier skin less still. It isn't a daily mask: used every day it tends to leave skin tight, rough or flaky. If you notice tightness or flaking, space it out or shorten the time.
Shine coming back a few hours later is your skin making oil as usual. The clay removes oil already on the surface; it doesn't switch oil production off, so there's no need to mask more often to keep skin matte all day.
Does multani mitti shrink pores?
Not permanently. Pores look less noticeable for a while after a mask because the oil and shine around them have gone, which is a change in how your skin looks, not in the pores themselves. Their size doesn't change, and they don't open or close.
Is multani mitti good for open pores?
If "open pores" means pores that look large on an oily nose or cheeks, a short mask can make them look less obvious for a few hours by taking the shine off. Keep it thin and occasional: leaving it on until it's hard and tight doesn't make pores any smaller.
What to expect afterwards
Straight after rinsing, oily skin usually looks more matte and feels cleaner and fresher. It may feel a little tight for a short while; moisturise if it does. A freshly rinsed face can look brighter because excess oil has gone, but that isn't a change in skin tone. Can multani mitti remove dark spots? No: dark spots are pigment in the skin, not oil on top of it; the daily-use and whitening page explains more. For shine and greasiness, multani mitti is usually a more direct choice than besan, a gram-flour pack; the fuller's earth page compares them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can multani mitti cause acne?
Breakouts after a mask usually come from the routine: leaving it on too long, using it too often, scrubbing it off, an irritating mixer, dirty tools or a heavy product afterwards. If spots keep following the mask, go back to the plain water mix, use clean tools and keep it short, and patch test any new mix 24–48 hours before first use. If your skin burns, swells or comes up in a rash, rinse the clay off and stop using it.
Can multani mitti remove blackheads?
No. An oily nose usually feels cleaner and less greasy after a short mask, but a blackhead is a plug inside the pore, and a rinse-off clay mask doesn't pull it out or stop new ones forming.
Can I apply multani mitti daily on my pimples?
No. Fuller's earth isn't a treatment for pimples, and a daily dab of clay mainly dries and irritates the skin around them. Use the thin mask on the oily area once a week, or up to twice if comfortable, keep it off picked, broken or very inflamed spots, and rinse it off gently.
Does multani mitti reduce oil production?
No. It takes up the oil already on your skin, so the matte look lasts a few hours and then shine gradually returns. Your skin goes on making oil as usual.
