Fix it
Hair Turned Green After Indigo? Why It Happens and How to Fix It
Green hair after indigo means the cool blue is showing without enough warm henna underneath. Don't add more indigo first: let it settle, strand test a henna step to put the warmth back, then deepen with fresh indigo if needed.
The short answer: green hair after indigo means the cool blue of indigo is showing without enough warm colour underneath to balance it. It's most common on grey, white, blonde or bleached hair when the henna base was weak, patchy or skipped. Don't add more indigo first: let the colour settle for a day, strand test a henna step to put the warmth back, and only then deepen with fresh indigo if you need to.
Why did my hair turn green after indigo?
Indigo gives cool blue. Over a warm copper base from henna, your eye reads the two together as brown or black. Over a pale base, such as grey, white, blonde or bleached hair, there's nothing warm to balance the blue, and blue over a pale, slightly yellow strand can look green. Uneven henna gives the same effect in patches: green where the henna was thin, darker where it took.
The usual causes:
- no henna under grey or light hair, or indigo used alone on it;
- a henna step that was too short or didn't cover the greys evenly;
- a one-step mix with too little henna for your starting colour;
- bleached or highlighted sections, which grab colour differently.
Will it turn darker on its own?
A slight green or blue cast straight after rinsing can soften as the colour settles over the first day, so judge it once your hair is dry. A clearly green result won't necessarily turn black by itself; it needs the warmth put back.
What about blue hair?
Blue is the same imbalance, just showing more directly. The fix is the same: add warmth with henna before any more indigo.
How to fix green hair after indigo
- Wait a day. Look at your hair dry, in daylight, once the colour has settled.
- Strand test a henna step on a hidden lock, or on hair from your brush: rested henna, left on for at least 2 hours and rinsed with water only. It puts back the warm base the green is missing.
- Apply henna to the green areas if the strand test looks right. Go gradually: too much warmth can swing the colour copper or red.
- Deepen afterwards if needed. Once the base is balanced, a fresh indigo step on dry or damp hair can take it back towards brown or black.
- Wait 24 hours after each step before shampoo or oil.

How to stop it happening next time
- Choose the method by your starting colour: on grey, white or light hair, henna goes on first for black, or into the mix for brown.
- Saturate the greys completely in the henna step and leave it on at least 2 hours.
- For brown, use the right ratio: more henna for a warmer brown, more indigo for a cooler, darker one. See how to mix henna and indigo for brown hair.
- Strand test before a full head, especially on bleached or highlighted hair.
Green powder, green skin
Green indigo powder is normal: it's dried leaf, and the blue only forms once it meets water and air. Green or blue on the skin at your hairline usually comes from fresh paste and fades with washing; petroleum jelly along the hairline, ears and neck, kept off the hair, helps prevent it. Colour on comfortable skin is most likely staining. Burning, swelling, blisters or a spreading rash can be a reaction: rinse and stop using indigo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my grey hairs green?
Grey strands have little natural colour, so the blue of indigo shows on them. Without enough henna warmth underneath, blue over a pale strand can look green. A stronger henna base usually fixes it.
Henna turned my hair green: why?
Pure henna gives copper to red, not green. Green usually means indigo was in the mix or applied afterwards over a weak henna base. A "henna" that turns hair green on its own may not be pure henna, so check its ingredient list.
Can henna fix green indigo hair?
Yes. Henna adds the warmth that green hair is missing. Strand test first and go gradually, because too much can tip the colour orange or red.
Should I put more indigo on green hair?
Not first. More indigo adds more blue and can make the imbalance worse. Fix the henna base, then add fresh indigo if the colour needs deepening.
Can you dye hair blue with indigo?
Indigo on very light hair can look blue, but it's not a predictable blue dye: results are often greenish or uneven. It's made for browns and blacks with henna.
